Robert Coy is a MS in Economics graduate who believes, “The Belk College of Business is a phenomenal value in an amazing city full of opportunity.” In addition to his studies, Coy enjoys hiking, backpacking, camping and anything else outdoors.
What degree did you pursue and why?

I pursued a Master of Science in Economics. If I can’t be a meteorologist with my background, I’m glad to join another field where recognizing that we are often wrong is an integral part of any announcement.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

The Belk College has offered an amazing experience to make me a more well-rounded economist. My undergraduate program was much more macro-focused, whereas the Belk College of Business has helped me better understand the business and micro-focused aspects of economics. And, it’s an amazing value in a wonderful city!

Tell us about your job. What lessons have you learned in your courses that you were able to apply on the job?

I am pivoting from an analyst position in nonprofit business strategy with the American Red Cross to a consulting career focusing on public sector projects with IBM in Washington, DC. At American Red Cross, I’ve been able to utilize different models and methods from my courses to bolster analyses. Regarding IBM, I’ll let you know after I start!

What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

I love hiking, backpacking, camping and anything else outdoors. I also recently purchased an inflatable boat so I’ve been getting into rowing as it has gotten warmer. Summer is looking great!

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?

My involvement with UNC Charlotte’s Graduate Business Association has without a doubt been my favorite part of my graduate student experience. I have acted as both their Community Service Chair and President, and this has allowed me to become more involved as a student while giving back to the community, attending and planning professional development workshops, and networking with local alumni.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone considering a master’s program?

The Belk College of Business is a phenomenal value in an amazing city full of opportunity. It’s incredibly difficult, but if you’re willing to put in the time it takes to earn your Master’s, the potential payoff is certainly worth it.
